IoT: LoRa Applications

LoRa (Long Range) is a proprietary low-power wide-area network based on spread spectrum modulation techniques. LoRa uses license-free sub-gigahertz radio frequency bands, and its low data modulation technique is ideal for IoT applications. LoRa is particularly suitable for the likes of larger buildings and shopping centres as it offers great signal penetration through walls.

While LoRa defines the lower physical layer of the network, LoRaWAN is one of several protocols developed to define the upper layers of a LoRa network. LoRaWAN is a cloud-based medium access control (MAC) layer protocol which acts mainly as a network layer protocol for managing communication between LPWAN gateways and end-node devices. LoRaWAN is maintained by the LoRa Alliance.
